America has always measured itself with respect to ambitious goals of high moral content, such as the ones set out by Martin Luther King Jr. and Susan B. Anthony, by Lincoln and Roosevelt. But such goals are thought to be in danger of extinction. The American national political conversation is now unheroic and unimaginative; vision has been replaced by fear. Perhaps we really are in the grip of a rage that is destroying us. That would be a tragedy, but it can be averted. America can once again set out noble goals for itself. But humility is the first ingredient of greatness, and America’s political class seems to be bereft of humility. For America to be an example, we must seek our path as humble craftsmen, not as prideful masters. We definitely cannot be ideal-flinging liberals or morality-hurling conservatives.

"...a decent respect to the opinions of mankind..."

The Practical Utopian will present and discuss utopian ideas and proposals that are practical enough to enter our national conversation immediately. When she feels it is appropriate, the reader will carry out the most fundamental political action of all: discussion with others.
